View ProfileOwner: Tammie Pennel Established: 2021 In 2021, Tammie Pennel turned a long-held vision into reality by founding 4 State Searchlight Rentals. After spending 15 years contemplating the purchase of a searchlight for her own business, Tammie recognized the promotional hurdles that many businesses face due to the high costs associated with searchlight advertising. View ProfileMay 12 Random Observations of The Grand Lake Bum It’s that time of the year. If you’re not at Grand Lake every single weekend, you miss amazing events. There were so many things happening over the past weekend, there was no way to make it to everything. I went to the Oyster Roast & Bonfire at The Battlefield Friday night, and never escaped Shangri-La for the entire weekend – the Retailers’ Bazaar Saturday, the Farmers’ Market Sunday – but the highlight for me was Saturday night’s awesome Food & Wine Festival at Shangri-La. Great food, great beverages, and great music benefiting two great charities – DCCSAN and the Second Chance Pet Rescue. It was a fabulous night of musical memories from the Old Bulldog Band, too. Band members joked about being so old that they had been playing those classic hits from the 60s and 70s ever since they were in the Billboard Top Ten list when they were first released! ***** It was sures nice to have a sunny weekend with light wind and warm temperatures. After the monsoon season, I was beginning to wonder if we would ever see the sun again – but it showed up for an entire weekend of great Grand Lake fun! ***** We have a new Pope! No matter what you might have seen on Truth Social, Donald Trump is not the new Pontiff; but Pope Leo XIV is the first in history from the United States. He even has Oklahoma ties! He was actually a member of Tulsa’s Cascia Hall Board of Directors from 1999-2001. How ‘bout that! ***** A smart-ass buddy of mine said he was surprised to see a Pope from Illinois because he thought people in Chicago hated the Cardinals. (C’mon, man! It’s a baseball joke.) ***** I don’t know if we should expect an increase in the school drop-out rate next year or not. Governor Stitt signed legislation which bans cell phones in schools “from bell to bell” – no cell phones at school all day. I don’t know what Oklahoma kids want more these days – an education or their cell phone. At any rate, next year they won’t have both! ***** If you’re enough into politics that you’re already watching the 2026 race for Governor, the only scorekeeping available so far is fundraising. Attorney General Gentner Drummond topped the list in reports filed last week. He has raised $2.35 million and has $1.7 million in the bank. Former House Speaker Charles McCall was close behind. He has raised $1.37 million -but with one caveat: $601,000 of that total was out of his own pocket. I’ve always been confused about the lure of powerful public offices. What makes someone spend $600K of their own money to jumpstart a campaign to win a job that pays $147,000 per year? ***** Watching the Oklahoma legislature is always fun sport, as well. Last week was the final deadline for getting proposed laws passed (except for appropriations bills); but don’t let deadlines fool you in the legislature. Ideas have more lives than a cat in the Oklahoma legislature. Longtime Tulsa World political reporter Randy Krehbiel explained it this way: “As sessions progress, several bills are often compressed into one. Language appears and disappears like a magician’s rabbit. During the legislative session, wry comments about vampires, Easter and legislation rising from the dead are frequent. The last few weeks of a legislative session have more twists and turns than an Oklahoma funnel cloud.” ***** GRAND LAKE BUM SHOUT-OUTS: Happy birthday wishes go out this week to Grand Lakers Kevin Brady, Chance Grubb, Nancy Adkisson, Maxine Duncan, Byron Long, Jodi Gallagher, Gary Cameron, Greg Mantia, Gaylyn Haynes, Kim Klaus, Vicki Stockwell, Todd England, Gayle Larimore, Bob Hart, Randy Hess, Debbie Hess, Paula Silzer, Jordon Nichols, and Ellen Fleming. ***** BEST GRAND LAKE EVENTS THIS WEEK: Karaoke is back at Doc’s Bar & Grill at Shangri-La Thursday night (6:00-9:00). Thursday is also Trivia Night” at both BOOM at The Regatta and Mooney’s Sunset Bar & Grill. Thursday evening is a Grove Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours at Goodfellas in Grove (5:00-6:30). Eddy’s Lakeside Bar opens for the season at Shangri-La Marina Friday; and Friday is also the Grove Chamber of Commerce Scramble Golf Tournament at Quail Ridge Golf Course (8:30 a.m.). Saturday is Art in the Garden at Lendonwood Gardens in Grove (9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.). ***** RANDY KREHBIEL’S RANDOM FACTOID OF THE WEEK: Ventriloquist Edgar Bergen willed his dummy Charlie McCarthy $10,000. His daughter, actress Candice Bergen, got nothing. ***** FUN FACT OF THE WEEK: When it gets too hot in Australia, the nectar in some flowers turns into alcohol, and the bees that get “drunk” begin stumbling around. “Bouncer” bees at the hive won’t let them in until they’ve sobered up. (Brings new meaning to the phrase “getting buzzed,” huh?) ***** ODD FACT OF THE WEEK: Interstate 45 which connects Dallas and Houston, is technically not an “interstate” highway. It is one of the few interstate highways that lie entirely within a single state. It is 285 miles long – all in Texas. ***** BEST FACEBOOK POST OF THE WEEK: I’m looking for friends with benefits; and by that, I mean people who have swimming pools, boats, or vacation homes. ***** IS THIS REALLY A PALINDROME? If you spell “absolutely nothing” backwards, you get “Gnihton yletulosba”, which ironically means…absolutely nothing. ***** BEST SIGN SEEN THIS WEEK: Don’t fly Virgin Atlantic Airlines. They never go all the way. ***** BEST BLUESKY POST OF THE WEEK: Apparently, it’s only appropriate to say “Look at you! You got so big!” to children. Adults tend to get offended. ***** PUN OF THE WEEK: I tried to walk like an Egyptian and now I need to see a Cairo practor. ***** UNANSWERED QUESTION OF THE WEEK: How does a country $35 trillion in debt have the audacity to give me a credit score? ***** OBSERVATION OF THE WEEK: Of all the things that taste like chicken, isn’t it odd that eggs aren’t one of them? ***** QUOTE OF THE WEEK: “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness.” – Oscar Wilde (just in case you only knew part of the quote) ***** FEEL-OLD MOMENTS OF THE WEEK: The legend himself, Willie Nelson, turned 92 years old last week. It’s hard to believe that Jamaican reggae music creator Bob Marley has been dead longer than he was alive. He was only 36 when he died – and that was 44 years ago this week. ***** BEST WEEKEND LIVE ENTERTAINMENT: On Monkey Island, Sundown Entertainment hosts Thursday night karaoke at Doc’s Bar & Grill at Shangri-La (6:00-9:00 p.m.) and Ryan Graham performs live Friday night at Doc’s Bar & Grill at Shangri-La. Travis Kidd will provide the music Saturday night at Eddy’s Lakeside Bar. Lil’ Red and COBE will be at The Shebang Friday night. There is Musical Bingo Wednesday nights, and DJ Kennedy leads Rockstar Karaoke Friday night at The Monkey Bar – and Magen Faulconer will be on stage Saturday night. Ty Ellis & the Flatliners will perform at Big Shots Saturday night. On South Grand Lake, Legacy Lowenberg will kick off the weekend Friday night at Sharky’s at Hammerhead Marina followed by South of Vertical Saturday night, and Emily Hollingshed Sunday afternoon at 3:00. Downbeat will perform Saturday night at The Drunken Rooster in Cleora; and Lil’ Red & COBE will entertain Saturday night at Juan Montez at Red Arrow Marina. In Grove, Borrowed Money will provide the music Friday night at Grand Lake Casino’s Venue 655 followed by Playlist Saturday night. There’s musical Bingo every Wednesday night and DJ Laidback Larry will provide the musical entertainment Saturday night at R-Bar Dance Hall & Saloon. 90 lb. Wrench will be the Friday night entertainment at Cherokee Casino Grove followed by Zach Glover & Vintage Saturday. There are three nights of music this week at Indigo Sky Casino. Jon Dooly starts the music Thursday night followed by The Downbeat Friday and Blacknote Band Saturday. Finn Again entertains Saturday night in Riverbend Casino’s Club 60 West. Gypsy Ramblers will be on stage Saturday night at Buffalo Run Casino’s Backwoods Bar and Midget Wrestling Warriors “Reborn Tour” will entertain in Buffalo Run’s Peoria Showplace. Retro Rockerz start the weekend Thursday night at Downstream Casino’s Legends Sports Bar. Members Only take over with live music Friday followed by Western Justice Saturday. ***** DINING & DRINKING UPDATE: Eddy’s Lakeside Bar at Shangri-La Marina opens for the season this weekend. Sharky’s at Hammerhead Marina, Ugly’s Grill & Bar at Thunder Bay Marina, and Blind Swine on Duck Creek at Harbors View Marina are now open for the season, as well. Blind Swine Duck Creek is now operating on their summer schedule – opening at 3:00 Tuesday-Thursday, and 11:00 a.m. Friday-Sunday. PGA Players have a big week. It’s PGA Championship week! Coverage from Charlotte, North Carolina begins at noon Thursday & Friday and 9:00 a.m. Saturday & Sunday on ESPN. CBS picks up coverage of the final two rounds Saturday & Sunday at noon. NASCAR drivers are also in North Carolina this weekend for big activities. Coverage of the NASCAR All-Star Open begins at 4:30 Sunday afternoon followed by the NASCAR All-Star Race at 7:00 – both on FS1. There are some great college softball games being televised this week.
