June 23 Random Observations of The Grand Lake Bum Summer is here – officially! According to the calendar, it arrived with high temperatures beginning with a “9” last Friday on what is typically referred to as “the longest day of the year.” That’s not true, by the way. I stayed up all day and all night just to make certain. Sure enough, it was the same length as all the other days – 24 hours. FYI. ***** For the second consecutive weekend, there is a concert on the water Saturday. Despite the outrageous wind, last weekend’s Rock the Dock concert in Check-In Bay drew lots of spectators who were as anxious to get on the water as they were to hear great music – and they did both! This weekend is no different. The much anticipated Grand Jam in Duck Creek (in front of Harbors View Marina) is Saturday from noon ‘til 6:00. Let’s hope for a little less water and a little less breeze! ***** Grand Jam isn’t the only event signaling a really busy week on the waters of Grand Lake, though. The High School Fishing World Final and National Championship Fishing Tournament has the lake covered with high school fishing competitors this week. The tournament runs through Saturday, which is the final day. Also on Saturday, amidst the hundreds of boats full of high-schoolers, the Grand Lake Sailing Club hosts a Peanut Regatta with a bunch of sailboats. What could possibly go wrong? ***** Some people are just a lot quicker and better than others with responses to others who complain about things without thinking them through. One of my favorites is a flight attendant for British Airways who received a complaint from a woman who said she was not comfortable with the lack of blinds in a Boeing 747 first class restroom that had a window. “Madam,” said the flight attendant, “If someone is clinging to the side of this aircraft at 35,000 feet, they’ve earned the view.” ***** How did that old Beach Boys song go? “Bomb, bomb, bomb…bomb, bomb Iran.” Was that it? ***** GRAND LAKE BUM SHOUT-OUTS: Happy birthday wishes go out this week to Grand Lakers Jason Benson, Rob Stallings, Angella Johnson, Joe Zaloudek, Terri Fowler, Vic Bird, Dallas Sorrels, Bobbie Owens, Larry Sanders, Tonya Moorhead, John Jameson, and Dandy Risman. ***** BEST GRAND LAKE EVENTS THIS WEEK: Monday-Wednesday is “Kids’ Camp” at The Anchor at Shangri-La (8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.). Saturday is another Peanut Regatta from Grand Lake Sailing Club and the big Grand Jam on-the-water concert at Safe Harbor Harbors View Marina in Duck Creek (12:00-6:00 p.m.). Saturday night is Country Music Night at Big Shots (9:00 p.m.). Will Rogers Memorial Rodeo in Vinita, OK, is the premier rodeo event held in the Southwest! This is a four-day event that is kicked off by the Annual Will Rogers Memorial Rodeo Parade on RT 66 in downtown Vinita. Every night of the rodeo is filled with action packed events from Girl's Barrel Racing, Bare Back Bronc Riding, Steer Roping, Bull Riding & Team Roping, and much much more!! Bring the family and enjoy an amazing night at the Will Rogers Memorial Rodeo in Vinita, OK. Our History Will Rogers was born in 1879, at a ranch house on the Verdigris River. The only towns that existed nearby were Vinita, Indian Territory (which later became Oklahoma), and Coffeyville, Kansas. After his mother died in 1890, Will was sent to several schools away from the ranch, but the one he grew to like the most was Willie Halsell College located in Vinita. He attended three terms from 1892, until 1895, and he never forgot the happy days he spent there or the friends he made. Years later, while attending a school reunion in 1934, Will Rogers told the Vinita folks, "Have a rodeo here next year and I'll come back." He returned that fall for the old-timer's parade, but on August 15, 1935, just days before the rodeo, Will Rogers and famed pilot Wiley Post were both tragically killed in a plane crash. It was decided that the Vinita rodeo would be held as a memorial to Vinita's cherished "son" Will Rogers, and it has been every year since. We are a dedicated group of citizens from Miami and surrounding areas who have come together to establish a new shelter for animals in need. Our mission is to provide care, support, and a second chance for pets who find themselves without a home. Through the Miami Animal Alliance, we are committed to making a positive impact on the lives of these animals. Donate to Make a Difference Every contribution counts! We have set up a PayPal account on our website to facilitate donations. 100% of all donations received go directly to the animals at our rescue, ensuring that every dollar helps improve their quality of life. Your generosity will provide food, medical care, and shelter for our furry friends. Our Services The Miami Animal Alliance offers a variety of services designed to benefit animals and the community, including: Foster Care: We provide a nurturing environment for animals in need through our foster care program. Adoption Services: We help connect loving families with pets looking for forever homes. Volunteering Opportunities: We welcome individuals who want to volunteer their time and skills to help animals in our care. No-Kill Rescue: As a no-kill shelter, we are dedicated to saving as many lives as possible. Foster Program: Our foster program allows us to place animals in temporary homes until they are ready for adoption. Transport Services: We assist in transporting animals to their new homes or veterinary appointments. Low-Cost Spay and Neuter Services: To combat pet overpopulation, we offer low-cost spay and neuter services in our area. Foster Homes Needed Interested in Fostering? We are always in need of compassionate foster homes. If you have space in your home and love in your heart for animals, please reach out to us. We provide support with food whenever possible, and we cover any necessary medical expenses for the pets in your care. Why Foster a Dog? Fostering an animal can be one of the most rewarding experiences. By opening your home to a dog in need, you are not only helping the animal but also making a significant impact on the shelter's ability to take in more pets. Here’s how fostering benefits everyone involved: You free up space in the shelter for another animal in need. You provide the foster dog with time to prepare for adoption. You help the shelter gain valuable insights about the dog, ensuring they find the best home possible. You socialize the dog, helping them adjust to a home environment and interact with different people and pets. Become a Member of MAA Show your support by becoming a member of the Miami Animal Alliance! 100% of your annual membership fee will directly benefit the welfare of our sheltered animals. We strive to create an organization that you can take pride in being a part of. If, at any point, we do not meet your expectations, your prorated membership fee will be refunded. As a member, you will be invited to all meetings and have the opportunity to vote on significant decisions regarding the organization. You can also run for Board offices and join committees.
